Member since 1961, currently serve as Director and Web Page member. U.S. Army veteran, 1966-69. Retired District of Columbia Firefighter/Captain 1995. Employed by U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Buildings and Grounds Division, Center for Public Works as a Fire Protection Specialist, 1995-1999. Position eliminated during reorganization through BRAC. Currently employed as Inventory Control Manager for Verizon WITS 3 program. Certificate in Fire Science, Ceritfied as Fire Officer IV through Pro Board and IFSAC. Awarded Bronze Bar and Silver Medal for Valor DCFD 1984. Published author and Father of 3 grandfather of 2. Married 47 years to Shirley A. (Nichols) Spence. |

Why did you join the fire department? |
Always wanted to be a firefighter. Joined as soon as my folks would allow (age 17). Transitioned into career with District of Columbia Fire Dept. for 28 years and 7 months. |

What are your hobbies and/or interests outside of the fire department? |
Old timers Club, restoration of antique fire trucks and equipment. Writing books, playing saxaphone building stuff. |

What do you like best about being part of the fire department? |
There is nothing I do not like about the Fire Service. |
