October 24, 2009

On Saturday, October 24th 2009 at approximate 0930 hours, A259 and Medic 25 were dispatched on a Medic local in the 8700 Block of Temple Hills Road. While enroute, the units were flagged down by a citizen in the 8900 Block and advised of a vehicle that had flipped over into a creek. Units advised communications of the same and found a vehicle upside down in Piscataway Creek, with the passenger compartment submerged in approx. 3 feet of water. “D” Shift F/F’s Auld and Whitted, along with M25′s crew (Lt. Giampetroni) quickly assessed the situation and entered the water. Once at the vehicle, a female was found inside, unconscious. The crew quickly gained access using a Haligan Bar and Sledgehammer from A259 and did a rapid extrication of the victim. Once out of the vehicle, it was noticed the victim was not breathing and had no pulse. CPR was started and once E825 arrived, the Patient was loaded into Medic 25 and rushed to Southern Maryland Hospital. The patient was also 8 Months pregnant. Once at the Hospital, the patient regained a pulse and was breathing on her own. Thanks to the quick actions of all on the scene, the patient and her unborn baby both survived. It is situations such as this where the hard work and training pay off. Whether our personnel are doing this job for a living or simply for the feeling of helping their fellow citizens, I think we can all say “Job Well Done”.
